Save the Serengeti - Who are We?
A group of people came together the first of June when eTurboNews broke the story about the proposed highway through the Serengeti. We are from several different countries from around the world and from many walks of life - but what we have in common is a deep love of the Natural World - and Africa in particular. None of us has any financial or political interests in East Africa. Our only concern is to save the Serengeti and find an alternative to the proposed highway. We started this effort on Facebook, as a way to start spreading the news. We then developed a webpage, a series of petitions, and a Twitter account. This Crowdmap Action Page is our most recent effort to bring together the voices of diverse people across the globe who care about what happens to the people and environment of Tanzania. All the leaders of this group contribute to the cause in various ways. Some keep up with the Facebook page, post new information and to respond to comments. Some keep up with the website, and others manage this communication and action tool. And still others are working hard behind the scenes developing Economic Impact Statements, contacting and engaging in conversations with members of the media, conservation organizations, NGO's, government officials, tourism groups, biologists, scientists etc. When information is made public we post it through Facebook, our website www.savetheserengeti.org, and on this action site. We are many, and we choose to remain anonymous because it helps to protect the identity of those in our group who are in Tanzania, and others in Tanzania who have confidentially shared information. These include scientific researchers, journalists, and individuals in the private sector. They have the best interest of Tanzania at heart and clearly see the damage that the highway will bring. But they also understand that their intentions could be misconstrued, and we respect their privacy. And, this effort is not about the people who launched it. We’re only the initial spark of a movement that was bound to happen. This cause belongs to all of you who have joined the call to save the Serengeti and find a better way to bring about development. You are the people behind this campaign, and it is you who will make a difference. While we recognize that there are many important issues concerning the natural world and Africa, our mission is to Stop the Highway through the Serengeti and to Support the Southern Route that will help many more people, and we will stay focused on this mission statement. We thank you so much for your support and ask you to continue spreading the word. The media consistently quotes the numbers of people involved in this cause, as well as the number of signers on our petition - so keep telling everyone you know and encourage them to become fan's of this page, sign up for action alerts on our webpage and sign the petition. World Opinion has changed the course of history in the past and we passionately believe that it will be successful in this very important cause as well!!! Keep spreading the word!!
